Eight tutorials on 3d paintover techniques.
This week, ending 10/17/2015, we are sharing some really cool tutorials that show the process of using 3D for concept art and illustration.
Concept artists seem to use 3d paintover as a new norm, and this is something that seems to be almost be a requirement in the industry. 3D models are used in order to visualize and create quick mock ups that will ultimately be painted over and result in a 2D illustration. It is a great way to speed up the workflow when you may have to view designs from different angles. For some concept artists it is a way to pass up the baton to the new person over, like a modeler in the production pipeline. Since we have not touch much on the topic of 3D for concept art and design, here are a few 3d paintover videos that show how each artist uses 3D as a tool. Enjoy!

This week, ending 10/10/2015, we are sharing some time management tips and good time saving techniques for artists. More information can be found at www.activia.co.uk
This is the final entry to our Friday’s Time Management: Part 1 post. If you missed it, check it out and compare yourself to the 5 management personality types and common time management mistakes. There are even some time management tips that can help in becoming more efficient with your daily work routine. Being on top of management is not only beneficial for businesses but for all those who work within it, checking out companies like Bamboo Solutions can offer project management software for those that need more structure.
Coming up with solutions for managing time can be daunting, and sometimes even become one of the things that make us waste more time during the day. Places like Development Academy can help build personal skills, which involves time management, hopefully enabling you to succeed in your daily tasks. If you do not have a lot of time to sort this issue out then luckily there are a few different software that you can use to make your time management a lot easier. For even better news though, you’ll be pleased to know that Newswire announces another partnership with Profit.co and DigitalWinners meaning that you will get the most out of different time management software (such as OKR software)! Of course, time management is a skill itself, and it can be hard to make sure you stay on top of things. Maybe we are just trying to iron out a few things during the day. In the search for time management mastery, maybe we have accomplished daily exercise, eating a healthier diet, and keeping up with important tasks. Maybe, we just need to find an app or software to help us figure out what we spend our time doing most of the day. Today, we will focus on time management solutions to ease the daily workload.
Tracking Daily Activities:
Mind42 (mind mapping tool)
RescueTime (alerts when you spend too much time on certain things, blocks distracting websites, highlights accomplished daily tasks, tracks time expenditure, etc)
Toggl (time tracking app)
Managing Tasks:
Evernote (take notes, save information, make lists, create voice reminders
MyLifeOrganized (generates to-do-lists, organizes daily tasks, tracks daily tasks)
Remember the Milk (manage tasks, receive alerts, use with Google Calendar)
Zendone (integrates with Evernote and Google Calendar, task management app)
These are only a few tools to hep anyone become more efficient with time. Nowadays, everyone has a mobile device or computer with integrated calendars that sync to our daily routines. With proper training, these tools can help us visualize our time management skills, tasks, and activities. Try some of these out and see how you do over the next few weeks.

This week, ending 10/03/2015, we are sharing some time management tips and good time saving techniques for artists. More information can be found at www.activia.co.uk
We’ve all been there (some of us still are). As artists it is one of those things we struggle with on a daily basis. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about with finding the best creative ways to solve client problems and keep ideas fresh, we have to constantly evaluate our time in order to fulfill deadlines, keep up with learning new tools or techniques, networking, answering emails, going to meetings, balancing home life, sleeping, and if there is some time…maybe work out and keep your health in check.
This first post (of a 2-part post) will attempt to put some things in perspective for artists who are still trying to figure this out. Professionals and students alike, it is important to know how your time is being spent and how productive or effective you can become if you write down and eliminate unnecessary daily activities. For the purpose of this post, let me become your Jedi master and teach you the ways of the time management force. Enjoy!
In order to make it easier to understand and ease the readability of this complex subject, let’s look at 5 different management personality types. See if you fit into one of them.
If you see yourself in one of these categories (and trust me, we’re all in one of these categories in some way or another) then you have recognized a time management issue that needs improvement or a little nudge here and there to whip it into shape. Now, let’s also look at common mistakes that are counterproductive to a successful time management mastery.
Recognize any of these things? We can all relate to some or all of these. It doesn’t matter if you are a high school student or a veteran working professional in the industry. There is a solution to this. After exploring and observing tasks that make us wish we were masters of time or owned a time machine, we can overcome it by following some tips and implementing them into our daily lives. Here are a few that even though simple, it will make you seem like a CEO of a fortune 500 company.
This is common sense for a lot of people and yet, it is one of those things we struggle with daily. Remember, you only have to try it over and over until it becomes a routine. It’s just like going to the gym and getting in shape. We’ll continue to explore some more tips and time management apps that can help you become more successful in school or work. For now, take these note and print them, share them, or place it somewhere as a reminder to become more efficient. Until next time…

This week, ending 9/26/2015, we are sharing two podcast links from The Knowledge Spot and The 4 Hour Work Week.
The first and main podcast delves into the world of a professional artist; David Luong, a senior cinematic video game artist level 2 at Blizzard Entertainment. Blizzard Entertainment is a highly prestigious video game developing and publishing company, with a lot of success in the games they have published. Some of these successful games include World of Warcraft, Overwatch and the game-changing Diablo. To prove Blizzard Entertainment’s success, Diablo is still a much-loved game, despite first being published in 1997, with people still purchasing add-ons to build the runeword. Diablo’s continued success shows the legacy that Blizzard Entertainment has obtained. Luong has been extremely lucky in such a good job at a very successful company and talks about what it takes to pursue art professionally, how to learn as an artist, and how to teach as an artist and how to make money. The second podcast interviews film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor, and musician Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Planet Terror, Kill Bill, Machete Kills, etc).

This week, ending 9/19/2015, we are sharing two awesome links filled with early Star Wars concept art.
Many artists and concept artists contribute their interest in art for movies to early works done for the original Star Wars films. This post, although short, is packed with more than enough concept art work from legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie to keep the inner child artist entertained. Enjoy these works and keep them handy for when the new film comes out. It will be nice to compare them.
